My eldest brother had a very peculiar hobby when he was ten years old in the fourth grade of elementary school. Normally he’s such a late sleeper but during that phase of his childhood, I’d be surprised to find that he had beaten me to the yard first thing in the morning. I’ve always been the early bird of the family getting ahead of my parents and siblings in poking around the house when nobody was astir yet.
Mysteriously, the back door would be ajar to show somebody exited previously and I’d follow his tracks to the backyard or the garden in front. His crouch in a squat with his back rolled up in a rounded angle forward to the ground decapitated his head from view. Most of the time he played his obsession at the foot of a tree where the inhabitants grabbing his undivided attention trailed like an army busy at work. Ants were his toys.
My eldest brother or Kuya as referred to with a deference in Pilipino, got so absorbed the whole day with his unaltered engagement with the minute creatures, which sometimes can grow so pesky as to invade the food storage. To the point that he sometimes forgot to eat lunch or skipped snacks which highlighted every sortie to the kiddies’ playground haunts. In his case it was the brown earth matted with grass that became the abiding ring.
Standing behind him, I queried my Kuya what got him so intrigued with the tiny insects which seemed to spend their entire existence marching in a procession. The question got him excited to explain how the group efforts of the puny workers paid off in terms of a secure hole in the trunk of a tree to be their fortress. The next campaigns centered on procuring food for the colony as they formed long snaking lines down to the ground in a supply caravan.
There were big nimble orange or light brown ants which scurried about on their long legs to claim the green leaves as their home territory. My Kuya called them the Americans and Australians. I guess he could tell the difference from the Dundee accent. They were his favorite fighters as they were quick and agile and could easily lope off the head of an adversary in one sweeping stroke. They didn’t send big war parties but a tight squadron usually did the job.

The burly black ants boasted the dense populations. Kuya branded them the Africans because of their deep solid hues and muscular athleticism. Being everywhere and aggressive made their presence unwelcome not only to the denizens of the soil but also to the habitués of the loftier terra firma who treated them as pests. They fitted well into the villain role that my eldest brother categorized them into. They were the invading Huns.

Red is associated with the Chinese mainland and so the fierce red ants became the hordes of Genghis Khan. Their sting is the worst of the lot and to be attacked by them is akin to being set upon by killer bees. The red legions fight to the death even when outnumbered at great odds. My Kuya alternately referred to them as the Roman gladiators as if the lowly miniscule warriors could sport plumed helmets and red capes while hoisting the Roman eagle.
The game like in real life was warfare and Kuya was the instigator. The trick was to lure a column of red ants with an appetizing crumb of bread farther and farther into the battlefield where they would inevitably run headlong into the tribe of blacks which blindly tailed the same kind of bait. Leave a morsel of food between their armies and they go charging like brigades to tear each other to death for the spoils.
The Abba Krishna gave us brains to unravel science and be above ants. Brains need the ladder of creativity fueled by inspiration to climb up to the pantheons that not only transcend the limitations of matter but propel it unto itself until the very core which vibrate as superstrings and open into new dimensions of life and consciousness. Technology can impose order and efficiency into the living on this plane but we were destined for something more.
Stop staring down to the ground at the ants that are so hardy they could outlive our species in the terrain we know where survival of the fittest reigns as the rationale for war. Look up at the endless heavens and feel the lure and the invitation of the Abba Krishna to be more than what our mortal constraints that surrounds us effectively limits us by material parameters. When faced with a blank wall, cling to love to and let it blow you away to the right direction. Love is the GPS of the Abba Krishna. Make sure to sign in.
