NBI INCIDENT (First Chapter) (2nd Installment)
"Damn traffic," the placated kamikaze offered an olive branch for all to hear to fish for nods. Only to vanish fledgling empathy in the quickest time with a barbed rejoinder to assents elicited all around, "O yung mga hindi pa bayad diyan, wag na kayong magtago, don't shirk your fares."
Mike dug deep into his back pocket for the coins and fished them out in a hurry. He spied the saleslady give him a furtive smile as he rubbed against her elbows slightly. "Miss, please pass, pasa naman kay Mario Andretti", Mike pressed the fare on her palm and smiled inwardly as the name didn’t ring a bell to the others except the driver who apparently liked the comparison and was lost on the sarcasm. He broke into a self satisfied grin and eyed Mike with a new sense of fraternal regard of one racing expert to another.
The bumper to bumper convoy of vehicles ground to a dead stop blocking the intersection as the lights changed to red. It provoked the cross traffic poised east and west to let loose with an ear splitting cacophony of horn blaring.
This is going nowhere, Mike muttered to himself. He then launched into his usual ploy of jumping off and walking to the head of the line to find another ride that would have disentangled itself from the jam ahead of everybody.
Suddenly expletives cut the smoggy atmosphere, "Tarantado ka, gago ka, bumaba ka diyan hayop ka, you dumb ass, get down from the jeep!" , two jacket clad well built men in jeans with hand held radios and waistbands bulging with the contours of concealed automatics, yanked a jeep driver off the front seat. They threw him to the ground and started kicking him. Another similar garbed agent alighted from the driver’s side of an official looking black sedan with flashing police lights and run his free hand on the ugly dent and splintered taillight lens on the rear of the right side.
